Coach Kimball Wong loaded his cross country team from Chinese Christian School into two vans and headed down to the Shorline for a run last week, parking near the trail entrance in Heron Bay. The coach and his runners came back 45 minutes later and the vans were gone. The coach’s personal items were in one van and the students had left their textbooks in the vehicles, too. At first they thought the vans were stolen, but they found out they had been towed. READ MORE

Persistence has paid off for one San Leandro resident, who landed a job at the new Grocery Outlet market despite her disability and the tough economy. Marla Hand’s enthusiasm for the store outweighed the diffi culties presented by her low vision, and she became a fullfl edged employee with the help of job coaches from East Bay Innovations. In Late August, the City of San Leandro conducted a poll to take the pulse of the community and see if the public might be willing to pay any additional parcel or sales tax. Last week, the results of the poll were shared with the City Council and, in the upcoming months, the council will determine whether any new taxes will be on the Nov. 2010 ballot. READ MORE

Garry Stocking just got back into town in time to renew the license on his motorcycle down at the DMV. “It expires today,” he said. “If it wasn’t for that, I’d still be gone.” Stocking only had to cross about five states to make it back in time. He left San Leandro a month and an half ago and swung through Nevada, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming and made a stop in Oregon on the way home. Read more

Every year, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to Coastal California and the mountains of Mexico, some from as far away as Canada. Thousands of Monarchs travel to San Leandro and cluster in the eucalyptus trees surrounding the Monarch Bay Golf Course. Read more

The crossing guards are set to return to San Leandro schools, following almost a month of negotiations between the school district and the city over who will foot the bill.
Crossing guards could be back on duty as soon as next Tuesday, as both the school district and the city hash out final details.
On Monday night, City Manager Stephen Hollister presented the City Council with a proposed contract with All City Management Services to hire eight crossing guards, one for each of the city’s elementary schools. Read more

One time a year, everybody from bikers to bankers get together for beer and music in downtown San Leandro.
On Sunday, the crowd rolled up and cashed in at the annual Sausage & Suds Music Festival on Parrott Street where the bands made music on a warm fall afternoon. Read more

State Senator Ellen Corbett recently announced that seven bills she authored passed the legislature this year and are now awaiting approval by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Corbett represents District 10, an area that includes San Leandro, Hayward, Fremont and a few others in the East Bay.
The former San Leandro mayor who still lives in the city, had made keeping San Leandro Hosptial’s emergency room open one of her pet projects. Read more
