    Amy,

You do not account for the story correctly. Perhaps you weren’t at the meeting or maybe you play favoritism to the Councilman’s wife. Either way, Connie Stephens was very disrespectful to many of us citizens by rudely stating that the meeting was for her neighborhood, Estudillo Estates, and several times told people to leave and have their own meetings. Clearly, Connie does not know how to facilitate meetings, nor does she have any political saviness to deal with the concerns of the SL citizens. The only good thing that resulted out of her meeting was that a set of people, including Karen Fernandez, decided to work with all of the SL citizens. Untrue to your story, Connie did not make her meeting inclusive of all of SL. The only thing that helped many people, who were unwelcomed, stay at the meeting was an outburst by Tim Holmes from Zocalos asking us to calm down and listen to Connie.

I agree to a point with Amy, the full picture wasn’t presented. Mrs. Stephens did say many times if you want your stats and your own neighborhood meeting then plan it yourself. I’m sure that is what prompted Ms. Fernandez said she would organize a city wide one- which I understand she has. Here is a notice I got in my email just moments ago. Seems they are pretty organized. I suggest we all attend this one:

Concerned residents of San Leandro are combining efforts with the grassroots organization “Healthy San Leandro Collaborative”. The new program known as “Quality of Life Services”, is dedicated in providing a forum to be heard, to educate the community on shared concerns, and implement a variety of remedies those already in place and yet to be created.

Safety will be the first topic addressed. One resident Janet Palma said it best, “I don’t just “live” in my neighborhood since I eat, play and shop in other areas as well and want to know they are all safe.”

Quality of Life Services will sponsor the Community Open House on Wed 2/19 at the Main Library lecture hall at 6:30 pm. Facilitated by Lt. Marc DeCoulode, a 70 minutes open forum will be devoted to all residents who sign up that night to speak. This is the focal point of the meeting. You pick your topic- you speak your mind. Residents are encouraged to sign up to speak that night – let every voice must be heard.

Subsequent to the city-wide meeting will be a series of smaller meetings coordinated by district. These will include education on how to improve your neighborhood for yourself, your family and the community as a whole.

Quality of Life Services states “All efforts are welcomed and we hope that all San Leandro residents partake in any group that is working towards a safer city.”
