San Leandro High School kicked off their badminton season with an 8-7 win over Tennyson High. This win against the Lancers is a first in San Leandro badminton history. Newark Memorial brought their big guns on Tuesday night, sinking the Arroyo girls basketball team from outside the 3-point arc, 59-54. Both Ashtyn Mullin and Danielle Robledo sank four 3- pointers for Newark, and Lauren Ortiz added a pair to give the Cougars a total of 10 treys — seven in the first half — as Newark advanced to the second round of the North Coast Section, Div. 1 playoffs. …. The San Leandro High boys basketball beat Mt. Eden convincingly, 72-53, Friday but it wasn’t good enough in the eyes of head coach Todd Petersen. San Leandro improved to 3-1 in the Hayward Area Athletic League but that one loss to Castro Valley is still a fresh memory for the Pirates. The team knows they’ll have to play better when they go up against Bishop O’Dowd and Castro Valley later this month. …. Read more

The San Leandro High boys basketball team entered the season as favorites to with the league title, but Castro Valley gave the Pirates a reality check Friday night. The Arroyo High boys soccer team went into last Thursday’s match with Moreau Catholic looking for their first league win, and this time the Dons finally opened the door. It took a while. Nobody scored in the first half. But late in the game, Arroyo forward Mario Gonzalez took a pass from Jason Linter and drove the ball into the net. ….Read more

San Leandro High bounced back from a 16-point deficit in the first half for a 73-67 overtime win against Berkeley in the final game of the East Bay Showcase, played at Chabot College on Saturday. Jared Cunningham scored 30 points and Travis Sims landed a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of overtime to put the Pirates ahead for good. …. Read more

Monte Vista running back Richie Storlee broke away on a 20-yard rampage to the end zone for the Mustangs first score against San Leandro on Friday night in first round of the NCS 4-A playoffs, and he was just getting his feet wet. Storlee put the Pirate defenders to the test all night as Monte Vista built a 35-0 lead and held off San Leandro for a 35-13 win at Burrell Field. The Mustangs will travel to face top-ranked De La Salle this Friday night. …. Read more

Arroyo High runners Derek and Danny Thomas finished among the top four runners in the cross country league championships, held in the drizzle at Hayward High on Saturday. The Thomas brothers helped Arroyo High take second place as a team at the HAAL Championships. Combined with their first place finish in the regular season, that gave the Dons the HAAL trophy this year. …. Read more
